Melasma

Melasma, also known as hormonal pigmentation or hyperpigmenation, is a skin condition characterized by a brown or blue-gray skin discolouration.  It affects mostly women, but some men have been known to suffer from the condition.  The exact cause of Melasma is uncertain, but typically it develops in women during their reproductive years and is thought to be triggered by factors such as sun exposure, contraception and when there are hormonal fluctuations as seen in pregnancy.  People with darker skin tones are more prone to developing Melasma and it usually appears on the cheeks, chin, forehead and upper lip.  Melasma is a skin condition which requires treatment and management. *

Melasma is most often seen in cases of:

  • Pregnancy
  • The use of contraceptive medication
  • Von Recklinghausen disease
  • UV exposure
  • Sun trauma
  • Birth spots
  • Congenital melanocytic nevus
  • Skin trauma
  • Some medications

These skin pigmentation abnormalities appear as larger uneven areas of brownish pigment, age spots, freckles, or liver spots, as they are called, on any parts of the body, but their appearance on the face and hands is often the most traumatic for sufferers. In pregnancy, the marks often fade over time after birth, but may linger in some individuals.

While Melasma is not always only a result of pregnancy, but of various other factors, these too have treatments available to help blend and normalize skin colour and tone using topical applications and lasers. In pregnancy, the Melasma is known to dissipate naturally in some cases.
