Laser Resurfacing

Laser Resurfacing is effective in the treatment of wrinkles, enlarged pores, sun damage, acne and other scars, and for overall skin rejuvenation and skin tone improvement.  Laser Resurfacing is the treatment of choice for patients who feel they look tired, have aged beyond their years or simply want facial rejuvenation.

How does Laser Resurfacing work?

Erbium Yag laser emits a beam of concentrated laser light to areas of damaged skin and so removes thin layers of your skin’s surface. This skin will be replaced by new skin that is healthier and looks younger. Our system has the ability to provide a treatment that is optimised to your skin condition. Your wrinkles will soften and become less noticeable; some will disappear. Pigmented lesions will greatly improve.  Pores will shrink and your skin will take on a more youthful and glowing appearance.

Laser Resurfacing can be performed as a once–off procedure for a more dramatic result or as a series of smaller, individual treatments with less downtime.

When Do We Advise Against It?

The Laser Resurfacing procedure is not performed on those with sensitivity to light from oral or topical medications, those with active cold sores or healing wounds on the face, or on users of Roaccutane within the previous year.

What Is The Typical Course Of Treatment?

The Laser Resurfacing treatment is preceded by a period of preparation involving medications and specialized lotions.  On the day of the procedure, your specialist will administer local anesthesia and your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses for the duration of the treatment.

The laser beam will be delivered through a computer-controlled device that automatically scans the area of your skin that is being treated. You may hear a snapping or popping noise as the laser beam gently removes the outer skin cells.

It is important to follow your specialist’s instructions. You will be given specialised skin care products and instructions on how to use them. This will minimise your risk of infection and ensure the shortest healing time. The top layer of your skin will re-grow and can be covered with make-up on about one week.  Lighter laser treatments take approximately 30 minutes, but the one off deeper treatment can take up to 90 minutes.

What Can You / Can’t You Expect From The Treatment?

Your new skin will be free of the old sun blemishes and other signs of photo-aging.  To avoid new damage it is best to stay out of the sun.  Our skin care Specialists will recommend a range of suitable skin care products and supplements for you to maintain and protect the new you.

Your healing time will depend upon the size of the treated area, and the depth of the resurfacing. You may experience Erythema (redness), which may last several weeks. Healing time varies among individuals. Your Specialist can answer questions about temporary changes to your skin colour and how this can be camouflaged. It will take a few days to replace the outer layer of your skin.

What Are The Unwanted Effects / Risks Of The Treatment?

Infection is a risk, which can be managed by adherence to your Specialist’s prescribed aftercare regimen. Redness is common, and swelling may be present in the areas that are treated. You will be instructed on how best to care for your healing skin. Your skin will have a residual pink or red colour that will moderate and dissipate over time.  Pigmentation can be an unwanted side effect of any laser treatment.  It is therefore imperative that you adhere to our recommended regime for avoiding pigmentation before and after the treatment.
